Most associations offer special memberships for foreign students. In this way it is not necessary to become a full member, so that youre not subject to all membership requirements. At the same time, you can make use of many facilities, integrate easily into the University world and get to know fellow students.
No. The university even stimulates membership, as associations contribute to the development of social and organisational skills. It is always possible to combine membership with studying, as there are no major activities during examination periods and the membership of an association carries few obligations for foreign students.
As mentioned earlier, there is a high diversity of student associations. Some will have their own building and bar, whilst others focus solely on e.g. sport. Therefore the amount of time possible to spend in an association can vary as well, depending on which one you choose, and what you choose to do within it (organizing a party or making a yearbook can cost a lot of time, but such activities are not compulsory). Membership fees depend on the association you wish to join and may vary from 0,- to 100,- per year for international membership. Bearing in mind that student associations are non-profit organisations, a membership fee is spent on activities, parties, etc. and thus can be seen as an investment in having a good year.
Since there are 22 student associations, the differences between them can be enormous. Therefore it is advisable to bear in mind the different types of association, and check out their websites, to which you will find links on this site. If it seems interesting, give them a call. After all, you may be missing out on a great time!
